According to a 2006 U.S. Department of Justice report, there were more than 7.2 million people in prison, on probation or on parole (released from prison with restrictions). Most experts attribute this mass incarceration of American citizens to the 1980’s drug laws, 1980’s sentencing laws and the advent of private prisons creating the prison industry in the United States.

Reginald would:

• End the era of mass incarceration of Floridians and other citizens;
• Reform mandatory minimum sentences, giving judges discretion to decrease sentences under certain circumstances;
• Encourage the use of smart strategies like police body cameras and end racial profiling to rebuild trust between law enforcement officers and citizens of all communities; and
• Help formerly incarcerated inmates successfully return to society and obtain jobs so that they become tax-paying citizens.
